Bedroom Makeover - work in progress

So I'm doing some temp work (and soul searching) while I continue my job search.  I'm not fond of the idea of being chained to a computer and desk all day for the rest of my life, but I am trying to have patience and faith that God will bring me something that will make both of us happy.

My dream would be to have my own business making and selling things, like home decor items, but that must wait.  For now I will exercise my creativity on improving my own home.

I first wanted to tackle the bedroom.  The other rooms of the house are too much work to deal with yet, so I figured I could experiment with the bedroom.

My husband is not one of those men who does not care about the decisions being made for the design of the house.  He basically wanted veto power, which I can work with.  We agreed that his favorite things can be in the design of the bedroom and bathroom and I get my say in the rest of the house.  My husband's favorite color is blue so I went with that theme for the bedroom.

The first thing that had to go were the floral curtains.  My home previously belonged to my great aunt who passed away a couple years ago and most of the furniture and fixtures were left behind, and they are not my style in the slightest.  On Pinterest I came across DIY roman shades and thought they would be a good alternative to the long heavy curtains that let the street light shine through between the panels at night (I hate city living, and this is reason #493).  My husband did not want too much pattern, but I needed some kind of detail so I chose to do a ribbon border (Heat N' Bond was my best friend for this project!).  The fabric came from curtain panels I bought from WalMart (room darkening!).

I hate white walls!  With a gender neutral goal in mind, I chose a light gray (though my husband swears it looks purple) and kept the white trim.  The pair of us did one of the messiest jobs of painting, but it turned out well in the end.

Next I needed a headboard.  I didn't want to go overboard with blue tones so I chose black, with some classy detail.  I used foam board and wrapped padding around it, using string to awkwardly hold it together, then wrapped the fabric around it and put three nails through all of it into the wall at the top.  It was a very shabby job but I did not want to attach a heavy board to the wall.  This seemed like a more temporary (and cheap) option.  I might redo it some time to make it more sturdy, but so far it is still in one piece.

*Update about the headboard: so the nails keep coming out of the wall.  I think my next option is to screw them into the wall.  I wanted to avoid large holes but that's where we are.

My next task is to fill an open space between the bed and the closet with some kind of art.  I am currently working on this Pinterest idea, but getting the words to line up right has proved to be a pain!  Since I started working full-time with this temp job I have not had the time to work on it so that will be a later update.

I would consider lamps as a home's jewelry, or that is what I think they ought to be.  I have dreams of buying thrift store vases and lamps, reviving them into beautiful home decor, and selling them online or at the flea market.  Some day I will work on that dream, but for now I am just working on my home (and trying to find my place in this world post graduating college).  I found a lamp for my husband's side of the bed at a thrift store and we are both very pleased with it, though it still needs an appropriate sized shade.  The one it sports now is from a pop (or soda if you are more familiar with that term) can lamp I made in third grade.  I might add some ribbon detail later.  And I am still looking to replace my Tiffany lamp with one that better fits the scheme of the room.
